rancis Bacon was involved in the founding of the Virginia
Colony; as he was a key member on the Council of the
Virginia Company. William Strachey the colony's first
secretary wrote that, "Bacon was the most noble factor in
the Company." A legacy remains, if indirectly, in the form
of Minerva, the Roman counterpart to AthenA the "Spear
Shaker," on the Virginia state flag. Minerva is standing
above a soldier, symbolizing victory over tyranny.
