What about "NE EXTRA OLEAS"?

Google result...

https://blogs.loc.gov/international-collections/2019/06/in-harmony-small-things-grow-the-elzevir-family-of-publishers-and-printers/

"The Elzevirs worked mainly with scholarly material including religion, philosophy, law, the classics, history, geography, medicine, and the natural sciences. The family expanded its operations to Amsterdam and Utrecht, as well. A later mark used by the Elzevir family shows Minerva, the goddess of wisdom, by an olive tree. The banderole, or banner, reads “Ne extra oleas” (Nothing beyond the olive tree). This is taken to mean that one should stay within the bounds of wisdom."

image.thumb.png.0a9aef30653bf963ab06a2aa9872e781.png

Same article we see the sphere:

"With the Low Countries in the grip of religious and political controversy, publishing contentious material could result in severe punishment by those in power. Thus printers frequently resorted to anonymity, leaving out their names or using a mark that differed from their usual ones. The Elzevirs sometimes used a sphere as a device when discretion was advisable."

OK, bed time for me. Everyone else is already asleep. Hope to have time tomorrow to dig in more!!

One last note, a 1st Edition is available for $350.00. If I were in better times I'd add it to my collection!

The engravings I've seen this morning from the 15th to the 17th centuries tend to have rays coming from the sun during an eclipse.

Whether a Moon or Eclipse, it is a Celestial Orb in the Heavens "As Above". Being a book on Science, it really might not matter at all. 🙂

Yann, I love the SIFR discovery. Rob, those are two ships (head on) in the background so Bacon is effectively between two pillars. He’s pointing up (totally agree there’s an as above, so below symbolism in his hands). I think it is the moon as the keystone at the top of the Royal Arch is Cancer, the sign of the Moon (and also the sign the Summer Solstice occurs in, in Tropical astrology, hence why it’s the keystone).

Traditionally,  the left side is made dark and the right is light, you can see that here in the dark hand and light hand, but as Peter Dawkins points out these can be reversed depending on whether you are standing looking into ‘the temple (through the pillars) or out from behind them.

Drawing attention to the whole concept of opposites/polarities (light, dark, enlightenment/ignorance, Good, Evil etc) may be why the opposite side of the globe is light (ie you’d expect the left side of the globe to be dark like the hand but it’s the reverse).

There are 3 Men, 3 types of hats, what appears to be 3 triangular shaped peaks on left? The letters OSO are 3 letters in a different script in Philosophia. I’ll keep looking

I would LOVE to own this book too!FE1C78F7-AFD2-4C1E-8567-FD2DECBB508B.thumb.jpeg.cbf12e28a2f7ad41d7af0aec5ef3ce8e.jpeg

I’m  struck by the ‘oleas’ motto on the banner. Do these letters appear anywhere in the dedication of the sonnets or on any other frontispiece attributed to Shakespeare?  K

The three men on Bacon's engraving appear to represent the Three Philosophers as in:

The Three Philosophers is an oil painting on canvas attributed to the Italian High Renaissance artist Giorgione. It shows three philosophers – one young, one middle-aged, and one old. The work was commissioned by the Venetian noble Taddeo Contarini, a Venetian merchant with an interest in the occult and alchemy.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Three_Philosophers

Note one interpretation:

The possibility that the three men are King Solomon, Hiram I, King of Tyre, and Hiram Abiff has been advanced by Neil K. MacLennan and Ross S. Kilpatrick.

Bacon as Hiram Abiff is a Masonic concept.

It is curious, Kate, to me as the motto seems the be the opposite of Bacon's Passing beyond the Pillars idea.

The banderole, or banner, reads “Ne extra oleas” (Nothing beyond the olive tree). This is taken to mean that one should stay within the bounds of wisdom."

But the motto is of the printer/publisher and not Bacon so much. It appears on several of the Elzevir family works.

As far as Shakespeare, "olive tree" (oleas) seems to only come up once:

A sheep-cote fenced about with olive trees?  a.gif As You Like It: IV, iii

OLIVER: Good morrow, fair ones: pray you, if you know,
Where in the purlieus of this forest stands
A sheep-cote fenced about with olive trees?

CELIA: West of this place, down in the neighbour bottom:
The rank of osiers by the murmuring stream
Left on your right hand brings you to the place.
    But at this hour the house doth keep itself;
    There's none within.

Here's an article to read in relation to the discussion:

I would LOVE to own this book too!

Can you imagine what Bacon's works will be worth if "proof" is found that Bacon was Shakespear! This 1st edition book from 1653 at $350 is pretty reasonable.

I paid $700+ for a 1625 3rd edition of Bacon's essays almost 20 years ago.

DEAR YANN, ROB AND KATE CAN YOU APPLY YOUR PENETRATING MINDS TO THIS EXTREMELY RARE TITLE PAGE OF THE 1645 EDITION OF THE HISTORY OF LIFE AND DEATH WITH WHAT APPEARS TO BE A PORTRAIT IMAGE OF LORD BACON WHILE AN INFANT OR YOUNG ADOLESCENT? THANKS.

Hi The Phoenixes ! Thank you.

This is  a difficult thing to say, but I want like to think so.

I think ( I admit that it is tenious ! 🙂  ) that there is a ressemblance between his mouth and the mouth of the 17 years old Bacon's Portrait by Nicholas Hilliard.

My first thought was it is a young Bacon and hope so.

The 1638 version actually has Bacon as a we know. So if the 1645 image was Bacon, where did they get it? Could be something yet to be revealed.

Face seems right, curly hair, etc. Intriguing!

Allow me to throw this out there real quick as I have a few things yet to do tonight.

I have been passionate about finding ciphers since 1998. In my years of experience, this is where I am now in 2022:

I find it very easy to find Bacon ciphers in Shakespeare. All over Shakespeare. This way and that, in every direction. Numbers 157, 287, 33, FBACON acrostics, so on and so on much more. Shakespeare is permeated with Bacon on so many levels. It is as if Shakespeare is a Bacon cipher first, then a bunch of popular plays second.

20 years ago I started to look at Bacon's works, seeking Shakespeare. Wouldn't it be the same?

Well, it is not the same. Granted the 1625 Essays begin with "Of Truth" which is 103 Simple cipher and it is a hint. But earlier versions did not begin with "Of Truth."

Bacon's works have visual clues in Title Pages, engravings, and so on, and ciphers that relate his works to the Rosie Cross. But mostly these graphics in our face images hold the symbols that are meant for insiders in his days and even today. We here are analyzing those images while those who are initiated have already been explained. The secrets of Bacon's public works when he was alive and beyond are for the circle of enlightened friends in his circle. There are a few hints of Shakespeare that we could look for, and his Royal Birth. But his friends had more to say about Bacon's role in Shakespeare and his Royal Birth than Bacon's works appear to have. Ben Jonson has been a fruitful avenue.

That said, I will always still love to seek Shakespeare ciphers in Bacon, but I will tell you it is not the same as seeking Bacon ciphers in Shakespeare.

Bacon was no fool, he had his plan and the Plays and Sonnets were part of what he produced and were part of his plan. He hid ciphers there.

The other part was his works as Bacon. His "circle" was secret, and being Science in the 16th Century while also kissing Religious Kings' butts, not having your head cut off, the emblems and Title pages tell way beyond the Profane and became Bacon's ciphers in his works. But not so much about him being Shakespeare.

Bacon was a complex person. 😉

That said, there are fuzzy boundaries and both Bacon and Shakespeare have ciphers and hidden symbols.

Just sharing what I have experienced in a couple decades.

Young Bacon, I say "Yes."

1638 - 1645:

image.thumb.png.86fba7ce6b3ededb29929435116cca81.png

Put a hat and some facial hair on the kid, you have a Bacon. That he may have been alive in 1645, could have offered an unknown image done of him as a 9 or 10 year old?

Hey, didn't Humphrey Moseley come up in a thread this past week??

My first look at the 1645 image I thought it was weird, or better said "unusual" the bases of the two pillars are both lit:

image.thumb.png.6779cdd554d01986e74bf6cc6f04bb27.png

I don't recall any other Bacon work without a dark and light base. How strange. Anyone know of another?

The 1638 version is as expected:

image.thumb.png.4e473da7407dfd7836a4f2205f7d57e6.png

So the missing Dark and Light where we'd expect at the base of the Pillars in the 1645 front-piece are clearly demonstrated in the Bacon child image.

How odd...

Hi Rob ! IWell done with the 2 portraits 😃And indeed, I noticed "Humphrey Mosley" yesterday and I smiled😊. The truth is that last sunday I found another name (in disguise) in the mail I received the 3/03 , the name of someone connected both to Humphrey Mosley and Shake-speare !!! And what i discovered is incredible. I will try and do my best to share my findings with you in the next few days. But there is much to be done.
