On Concealment

Day 222, in Sonnet 94:

Others, but stewards of their excellence.
The summer's flower is to the summer sweet,
Though to itself, it only live and die,
But if that flower with base infection meet,
The basest weed outbraves his dignity:
For sweetest things turn sourest by their deeds;

When you read this, it may be 2-22-22.

😉

Same Sonnet, next line in Day 223:

Lilies that fester, smell far worse than weeds.

For Bacon, the "basest weed" is these Sonnets, he is sharing the pain of his life, a "bastard", a Prince that never became, so on. This is not about his "fall", it is about his life and also about Elizabeth's life. He was her "sweetest" thing, yet she never acknowledged he was her son. The Sonnets (weeds) tell the story and smell sweeter than his life because of her deeds, or lack of deeds. His story is concealed in these weeds.

On Constancy

You tease me, A. Phoenix! 🙂

image.thumb.png.8b187bde5019b763effc22faa3c3b295.png

You had to know I'd jump on this obvious Bacon hint!

But I am constant as the Northerne Starre,

Of whose true fixt, and resting quality,

There is no fellow in the Firmament.

The Skies are painted with vnnumbred sparkes,

They are all Fire, and euery one doth shine:

But, there's but one in all doth hold his place.

So, in the World; 'Tis furnish'd well with Men,

And Men are Flesh and Blood, and apprehensiue;

Yet in the number, I do know but One

That vnassayleable holds on his Ranke,

Vnshak'd of Motion: and that I am he,

Let me a little shew it, euen in this:

That I was constant Cymber should be banish'd,

And constant do remaine to keepe him so.

I need to go to sleep, so much work tomorrow, but did a quick  lil' color coding for fun. I'd love to spend time to go over so much I see that is there and more that is hidden to see. But just glance the colors and even a novice will see something. Not even connecting to the Sonnets and other works. A tease back to you our treasured and amazing A. Phoenix.

So much there!

"Motion" has come up in the forum, right? If not, I need to dig into my emails as someone led me to a very cool "Motion" concept in the Sonnets a couple years ago. Pretty cool discovery that is not mine, adds up, etc.

OK, kind of excited, so will offer a clue to any who may sniff this out in years to come.

The above is on page 119 in the First Folio.

In the original 1609 Sonnets, Sonnet 116 was mis-numbered 119. And the line that says, "It is the star to every wandering bark," is Line 1618 of the Sonnet s and is at the exact 3/4 breaking point of the entire collection.

Remember:

But I am constant as the Northerne Starre,

Of whose true fixt, and resting quality,

And...

Vnshak'd of Motion: and that I am he,

Yea, I know, over most people's heads. But there are a few who will connect the stars one day. Maybe not tonight, tomorrow, next week, even this year, but someday...

"But, there's but one in all doth hold his place."

Bacon.

Thank you, A. Phoenix for teasing us!!
