We are excited to welcome Peter Dawkins, who will speak on Francis Bacon, Ros Barber, who will speak on Christopher Marlowe, and Rosemary O’Loughlin, who will present part of her Edinburgh Fringe 2022 one woman show on Edward de Vere, "A Rose by Any Other Name”. We will have a recording of the event, BUT Rosemary's performance will not be posted online so we really recommend attending in person because it will be informative and entertaining. Christie Waldman Posted October 12, 2022 Share Posted October 12, 2022 I wonder why their info on Bacon is wrong. He did not "graduate from Cambridge University with a law degree." He did not graduate from Cambridge University at all! With brilliant clarity, he saw through the problems with the Aristotelian method he was being taught there. So they sent him to France for a few years (as you all will know). When he came back, he began the study of law at Gray's Inn in 1579 at age 18 (if born in 1561). Gray's Inn did not award degrees like a modern law school. Bacon did, though, rise quickly to the top at Gray's Inn and in the legal profession. Just four years after he was admitted to the bar, in 1586, he had become a "Bencher" at Gray's Inn (the highest governing class of the students), one of the first to do before being elected a "Reader." https://www.shakespeareriddles.com/francis-bacon. Bacon was an "Ancient" at Gray's Inn when he gave his first "Reading" (lecture) in 1588, the second in 1600. (https://www.graysinn.org.uk/ and other references, my book, p. 109. For a complete chronology on Bacon's career, I used Daniel R. Coquillette, Francis Bacon, (Stanford: Stanford University Press, 1992), appendix 1 (taken from the Dictionary of National Biography 1921-22). Maybe they should let Peter Dawkins rewrite their page on Bacon? Getting the facts right is so important! Everybody makes mistakes, but once you know you have made them, it is good to try to correct them.
