Verse from Ch. 1, The Chemical Wedding"

If the poor human race
Were not so arrogant
It would have been given much good
From my mother
s heritage,
But because the human race will not take heed                                                                                                                                                                It lies in such straits
And must be held in prison.
And yet my dearest mother
Will not regard their mischief,
She leaves her lovely gifts
That many a man might come to the light,
Though this may chance but seldom                                                                                                                                                                             That they be better prized                                                                                                                                                                                               Nor reckoned as mere fable.

Apologies - can't seem to fix up the spacing

My first take-away on this quote is the "...a spacious forehead and a piercing eye...". LOL

Knowledge lives in the front of the brain, and it takes an eye to pierce the veil.

" it takes an eye to pierce the veil"... yes, but eyes are the instrument of the unseen seer, i.e. the self within. 🙂

I doubt that any of the portraits of FB have managed to capture his consciousness and charisma. I'm sure that his gaze was so penetrating that to be in the presence of the Great One must have been unforgettable.

Francis Bacon - Divinely Blessed

This quote reminded me of one you posted on 30 September by John Salkeld:

I wonder if, even back then, such flowery language seemed affected. More for show than an expression of sincerity. The little I've read of Bacon's correspondence suggests to me that he was economical and very to the point, with a dash of clever flattery to sweeten the reception of his message.

Lord Bacon Producer & Director of the Masque of Flowers

Hi A.P. Thanks for this timely quote. Frances Howard's portraits always stand out when I'm searching through the art collections of the period of Bacon's lifetime, but it's only recently that I finally decided to find out who she was. OMG! Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I think she was married as an adolescent to Robert Dudley, the 3rd Earl of Essex, who was the son of Robert Dudley, Francis Bacon's biological brother, which I think makes her Francis's niece by marriage. This helps to explain why Francis spent either £2,000 or £3,000 (depending which report you read) of his own money on the "Masque of Flowers".

Less that two years after her wedding to Robert Carr, Francis Bacon had to direct the prosecution case against Frances Howard Carr, Countess of Essex, for the murder by poison of Sir Thomas Overbury, Robert Carr's former best friend and mentor. It's like a Grand Guignol horror play. I can't think why it hasn't been adapted for the screen yet. There is a book by Anne Somerset called "Unnatural Murder: Poison in the Court of James I" and there's a short video summary of the Overbury scandal on YouTube:

The whole affair must have been a heavy burden on Sir Francis who was at the centre of the trial's proceedings. The other reason I became interested in the Overbury affair is because of a painting known as the "Cobb" portrait, which Stanley Wells and the Statfraudians insist is an authentic portrait of Shakespeare but, in fact, it is of Thomas Overbury. At least that is the opinion of the National Portrait Gallery. Sir Roy Strong called Stanley Wells's claims that the painting represents William Shakespeare "Codswallop". Enough said.
